    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wright says that the job is too intense, given he starts his journey to the studio at 8.30am and doesn't return home until 3.30am the following day. His decision to step down has sparked rumours he could sign for Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, but he has dismissed that notion, too.

  • WHAT WRIGHT SAID

"It’s time. Match of the Day is so iconic, so it’s a tough one. But, for me, it’s just run its course. I’m done," he told GQ. "It takes me two or three days to get over that. I’m 60 now [and] it’s just taken its toll."

He added: "You might see me pop up on Monday Night Football but I’m not leaving to go to Sky. I’ve got something to offer but, at the same time, it’s got to be on my own terms."

    WHAT NEXT FOR WRIGHT?

Having denied that he will make a full-time switch to Sky Sports, it is not yet known what the 60-year-old former attacker's next move will be. He might just decide to take it easy and enjoy more time with his family.
