Substitute Antony, who signed from Ajax for £85 million ($107m) in 2022, had the goal at his mercy but failed to convert Alejandro Garnacho's dangerous pass in the 59th minute. The TNT commentary team couldn't believe the Brazilian missed this chance and United's fans tore into the 24-year-old on social media.

@Aashish_Shukla7 commented: "Even If we had signed Antony for 10m.. it would've still gone down as the worst signing in club's history... This guy ain't professional footballer!"

@ChuBoi put: "Ten Hag benched our best player for Antony. Think about this game and how much of a crime that was…"

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United went on to win the game 3-1 thanks to a late hat-trick from Amad Diallo at Old Trafford on Thursday night. The result ensured the Red Devils kicked on from their creditable draw at Liverpool and their FA Cup win over Arsenal at the weekend. Ruben Amorim's side rise to 12th in the Premier League whereas Southampton remain rooted to the bottom of the table. Antony's blushes were saved but many believe his time with the club should end sooner rather than later.

  • WHAT NEXT?

Antony will hope to right the wrongs of his miss when United host Brighton in the Premier League on Sunday. However, the ex-Ajax man may not feature after this latest outing.
