PSG face more competition in Ligue 1 this season

PSG have won all of the last four Ligue 1 titles, and last season’s crown was secured as early as April. By the time the campaign was over, they were 19 points clear of second-place Marseille and had outscored them by 18 goals.

You have to go back to the 2020/21 season to find the last time the Parisiens didn’t win the title. Even then, they were just a point behind Lille. Having some competition in the division again would be a welcome change for supporters, and it seems like the gap has closed.

At the time of writing, there are four clubs that have outscored Luis Enrique’s side, and three whose defences have been just as solid. The French giants are only a point ahead of Marseille and Strasbourg, while Lyon and Monaco aren’t far behind.

You’d still expect PSG to go all the way by the time the season is over, but it could be a much more interesting run-in.

It’s not necessarily PSG who have got worse, they’re still a remarkable side, but there’s been a vast improvement from their peers. We decided to take a look at who could genuinely make a push for the title based on how they’ve started their 2025/26 campaign.

The Challengers

Marseille are the most likely contenders. Not only did they finish second last time out, but they’re the most in-form team in the league over the last five games. It’s not often we see a team with a better goal difference than PSG in Ligue 1, but that’s exactly where l’OM find themselves right now.

Then there’s Monaco, who may not be in the best of form, failing to win either of their last two, but they have real quality. They made some exciting additions over the summer, and once Paul Pogba is fully fit, they could really kick on. They’ve scored more goals than any other team, and if they tighten up their defence, they could be serious challengers.

Elsewhere, the bookies see Lyon as the fourth most likely side to make a push for PSG’s throne, and their start has been solid. They’ve been beaten twice, like many others, but they are incredibly resolute defensively. They’ve got a pretty young side, however, so this season may be too soon for them.

We also have a real outsider in RC Strasbourg, but they have started this season incredibly brightly. With 14 goals in seven games, including five from Joaquín Panichelli, they’re extremely robust. They’re still a young side, however, so it’ll be fascinating to see how long they can keep this up.

The first game back after the international break sees Strasbourg face PSG at the Parc des Princes. That should show us how serious Liam Rosenior’s side are. Victory would not only send them top of the table, but also send out a big message to the rest of Ligue 1.
