French football has witnessed one of its most dramatic survival stories as Girondins de Bordeaux have been pulled back from the brink of total collapse. The historic club, which has faced a harrowing period of financial instability, appears to have secured its immediate future through an extraordinary change in ownership.
Girondins de Bordeaux face the threat of complete judicial liquidation after the Paris Administrative Court upheld their administrative relegation to the French sixth tier. The devastating legal ruling dismisses an appeal by new owners Sparta Capital, forcing the six-time Ligue 1 champions into amateur football for the 2026-27 campaign.
Once the home of Zinedine Zidane and one of France’s great football dynasties, Bordeaux now finds itself in the wilderness of the fourth tier. Yet beneath the ruins lies a sleeping giant waiting for revival.
