Orlando Pirates welcome Mamelodi Sundowns for a blockbuster first leg of the MTN8 semi-final on Saturday at Orlando Stadium.

This is the biggest game of the season so far, where the MTN8 defending champions meet the Premier Soccer League defending champions.

Pirates reached the stage after beating Polokwane City 2-0 in the quarter-final, while Downs outclassed Richards Bay by a 4-0 scoreline.

The semi-final encounter comes at a time when the league has started with two games played by the semi-finalists.

Pirates have had a poor start to the new campaign, losing to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants. On the other hand, Sundowns have one win – against AmaZulu – and a draw – against Chippa United.

    Pirates are faced with a major injury concern as their captain, Nkosinathi Sibisi, is unlikely to feature. He missed their trip to Bloemfontein with his defence partner, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, wearing the armband.

    Head-to-head and recent form

    Pirates are yet to lose to Sundowns in the competition’s current format, which consists of two-legged semi-finals.

    The two rivals have met two times in the last four, with the Sea Robbers winning on both occasions: a 4-3 aggregate win in the 2011/12 edition and a 3-0 win in 2022/23.

    The PSL rivals also met in the MTN8 final in October 2023, with Pirates winning 3-1 in post-match penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

    The Tshwane giants can date their last win in the competition against Pirates back to 2007, when a goal by Brent Carelse handed them a 1-0 victory in the final.
