    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns have won the Premier Soccer League title for the last seven seasons.

Their closest challengers, Orlando Pirates, have gone for more than a decade without winning it.

The Soweto giants have been making massive steps to beat Masandawana to the crown.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the ongoing edition, Sundowns have played 18 Premier Soccer League matches, collecting 16 wins while suffering just two losses.

Pirates have played three matches less, posting 12 wins and three losses in the process.

While Sundowns have 48 points, the Soweto giants have collected 36, meaning they are trailing by 12 points.

However, coach Miguel Cardoso is not focused on the journey of their challengers, rather, he wants to ensure the defending champions collect as many wins as possible.

    WHAT CARDOSO SAID

“I don't look at the schedule of Pirates, I don’t know," the former Esperance coach opened up.

"I know that they [Pirates] have some games behind, so they have to play these games some moment but I don’t know if we can win ours until then... eventually, it can be an advantage, but if we also lose points, it will not be an advantage.

“So let’s wait and see; we got an advantage after their match [when they beat Pirates 4-1], and immediately two days after, we lost these three points to Galaxy away. So, we need to focus on our job," Cardoso concluded.

    WHAT NEXT?

On Tuesday, Sundowns will be away against Sekhukhune United in the league assignment before another task against Kaizer Chiefs. Both matches will take place before Orlando Pirates clash with Marumo Gallants.

By the time Bucs play, the Brazilians might be 18 points ahead which might discourage their challengers from staging a determined course.
