Kaizer Chiefs warned against underestimating AS Simba in their CAF Confederation Cup assignment or 'they will be embarrassed'

  • Mzansi set for club football

South Africans are set for club football return this weekend after Bafana Bafana's successful bid to play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Kaizer Chiefs will be in Lubumbashi to play their hosts AS Simba, in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round at the TP Mazembe Stadium.

It will be vital for the Glamour Boys to get a positive result away to stand a chance of advancing.

How Chiefs and Simba advanced to the second round

Amakhosi got past Angolan outfit Kabuscorp in the previous hurdle; it ended 1-1 in aggregate before winning the shootout 5-4.

AS Simba were paired with Djabal of Comoros, and they managed to claim a 3-0 win in aggregate to set a date with the Glamour Boys.

While the Premier Soccer League outfit have competed in CAF inter-club competition before, Simba are new in this tournament.

Chiefs have been warned against underrating their hosts since it might work against them.

Nyirenda predicts a cagey affair between Chiefs and Simba

"AS Simba is new in the tournament, but it is believed they have organized themselves very well [in the] past two seasons. That is why they found themselves in this stage," he told KickOff

"It will do Kaizer Chiefs a great deal of favour to work harder than they have been doing in the local league, or they will be embarrassed.

"Clearly, Chiefs hold the advantage, but they won’t get an easy ride. Congo's players are hungry to prove themselves," Nyirenda continued.

"Playing against a big team is like selling yourself; they will want to impress.

"That extra drive could give them an edge, so Chiefs would be wise not to underestimate them," he concluded.

  • Why is the game against Simba SC critical for Chiefs?

Amakhosi have not won any of their last five domestic games, which has piled pressure not only on the technical team, but the players as well.

A win away will make the environment in the second leg friendly, as fans will be motivated to cheer the team to victory.

The availability of Khanyisa Mayo and Lebohang Maboe is a boost for the Soweto giants who need experience in continental games.
