Our analysis: Form of both teams
For a second consecutive season, Steve Barker led Stellenbosch to a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership. As a result, the men from the Cape will play in the CAF Confederations Cup.
They’ve started this season well, having defeated Amazulu in the MTN 8, albeit after extra time. If Barker’s side beat Sekhukhune United, they would have a real chance to secure some silverware.
Although they performed well last season, they struggled against the champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, and this Sunday’s nemesis, Kaizer Chiefs. They lost both home and away fixtures to these teams last season, so the hosts may be eager to take revenge.
Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs have been active in the summer transfer market, which was necessary as they finished ninth last season. Additionally, they ended their PSL campaign without a victory in their final nine fixtures, which is something they must fix.
The Amakhosi went on a pre-season tour in Europe to try to get better results. While the long-term results remain to be seen, they only won one game on that trip.
Nasreddine Nabi was granted some leeway at the end of last season after he led the club to the Nedbank Cup trophy. That was their first piece of silverware for 10 years. He is currently under a lot of pressure as he tries to get the Chiefs back to being a top team.
Probable lineups for Stellenbosch vs Kaizer Chiefs
Stellenbosch expected lineup: Stephens; Godswill, Mcaba, Moloisane, Mdaka; Khiba, Palace; Titus, De Jong, Barnes; Cupido
Kaizer Chiefs expected lineup: Petersen; Frosler, Kwinika, Miguel, Mako; Cele, Ndlovu; Vilakazi, Chislett, Sirino; Silva
An unexpected return
The PSL doesn’t deliver much in the final third, especially when compared with some of the major leagues around the world. However, the Chiefs could score a lot more, as they’ve added new firepower such as Ethan Chislett and Flávio Silva to their arsenal.
The Stellies have conceded at least once in two of their last three outings, which will boost the Amakhosi’s confidence. Additionally, four of their last five matches produced more than two goals.
Their head-to-head history suggests we will see more than two strikes in this match. Two of the previous three clashes between these sides saw more than two goals fly in. Moreover, four goals were scored in their previous meeting, which was in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final.

Kaizer Chiefs’ dominance to return
Kaizer Chiefs are not expected to win this first game easily. However, that’s where value can be found. Chiefs have been far more active in the off-season than their hosts, even if the results didn’t go their way.
Nabi’s charges may have a slight edge in match fitness, which will be a huge benefit for the away team. Though it’s worth noting that Stellies have lost only one of their last 10 home matches.
The Glamour Boys have been dominant in recent years. They have won each of their last four trips to Stellenbosch, and four of the last five regardless of the venue, having lost only once. This suggests that Kaizer Chiefs could once again be a difficult team for Steve Barker's players to face.
- Stellenbosch vs Kaizer Chiefs Betting Tip 2: 1x2 - Kaizer Chiefs 3.85 with Betway
A close match expected
Chiefs could leave the Winelands with three points on Sunday, but it won’t be easy. Three of the last five head-to-heads were decided by a one-goal difference, with the visitors winning by that margin twice.
Last season, seven of their eight total wins in the league season were by just one goal, which equals 88%. To support this prediction, Stellenbosch lost just six games in their entire Betway Premiership campaign. Four of them arrived by a one-goal margin, equating to 67%.
A closely fought encounter is likely this weekend, with the Black and Gold winning by one goal.
- Stellenbosch vs Kaizer Chiefs Betting Tip 3: Winning margin - Kaizer Chiefs to win by one goal 5.80 with Betway
