We’ve witnessed some riveting rematches in the Octagon this year. It all kicked off with UFC 312: du Plessis vs Strickland 2 in February, and two sensational showdowns followed in the summer, UFC 316: Dvalishvili vs O'Malley 2 and UFC 318: Holloway vs Poirier 3. If that wasn’t enough, the countdown to Ankalaev vs Pereira 2 is well underway. The two light heavyweight warriors resume their rivalry in Vegas this October with the title belt on the line once again.
After a stellar and flawless 2024 campaign for Alex Pereira, which saw the Brazilian MMA megastar defend the light heavyweight title in style on three occasions by either TKO or KO, his world came crashing down at UFC 313 in March this year, when Magomed Ankalaev reigned supreme in the 'Entertainment Capital of the World'. Of course, Pereira has bounced back before after having a strap prised from his grasp. He lost the middleweight belt to Israel Adesanya at UFC 287 in April 2023, but that defeat proved to be a blessing in disguise, as he subsequently stepped up to light heavyweight, racking up five straight wins in the new division before the Ankalaev defeat.
Magomed Ankalaev has come a long way since joining the UFC roster back in 2018. It was a very inauspicious start for the man from Dagestan, who lost his first-ever bout after tapping out against Paul Craig. He didn’t let the defeat deter him, as he bounced back in style six months later, when he KO’ed Marcin Prachnio in the first round. That would be the first of Ankalaev’s four ‘Performance of the Night’ awards that he’s picked up in total, as he’s gone on a 14-fight unbeaten run since losing to Craig.

The Ankalaev vs Pereira encounter may be the feature event, but it’s a two-for-the-price-of-one deal for those lucky, fervent fans who will be cramming into the T-Mobile Arena, with two titles up for grabs. The highly anticipated championship doubleheader gets underway with bantamweight champion Merab ‘The Machine’ Dvalishvili making the third defence of his belt against Cory Sandhagen.
