Mamelodi Sundowns player reportedly nabbed for speeding

An unnamed Mamelodi Sundowns star was arrested for alleged reckless driving over the weekend.

According to reports, a 32-year-old Masandawana player was reportedly on his way to Roodepoort from Centurion where his Toyota Quest was pulled over by Gauteng Traffic Police along the N1 in Midrand.

The alleged culprit reportedly clocked 180 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

Nonetheless, the player was subsequently arrested and taken to the Midrand Police Station where he was eventually granted a R1500 bail.

The player in question was among 30 other motorists who experienced the wrath of the Gauteng Traffic Police over the weekend as the authorities looked to clamped down on speeding, putting into action a special high-speed operation.

This was confirmed by Gauteng community safety spokesperson Ofentse Morwane on Monday.

"He claimed that he was rushing back home in Roodepoort after dropping off a friend in Centurion,” Morwane told IOL.

“He was then arrested on the spot and taken to the Midrand Police Station where he was formally charged with reckless driving and an alternative charge of exceeding the speed limit of 120km/h on a freeway," Morwane added.

"The highest speed recorded for this weekend was on the N1 North of Pretoria where a driver of the Audi Q5 was caught doing 219km/h. The driver claimed that his father was admitted to hospital in Polokwane but it could not be confirmed," the spokesperson further revealed.

Meanwhile, the unnamed Sundowns player is set to appear in the Midrand Magistrates Court soon, although an exact date is yet to be revealed.

Sundowns were last in action on Friday night where they overcame Togo-Port 2-1 in Tshwane. The Brazilians though, are set to begin their league campaign this coming weekend with a clash against Kaizer Chiefs.
