Bidvest Wits - SuperSport United Preview: Defending champions desperate to end seven-match winless run

Bidvest Wits will host SuperSport United at the Bidvest Stadium hoping to turn their season around.

The Students are going through their worst run since Gavin Hunt took charge of the club in 2013, and they are strong candidates for relegation.

Wednesday's encounter presents them with the opportunity to overtake Ajax Cape Town into 15th position, but Hunt will have to do things differently if he's hoping for a different result.

While Wits' biggest challenge has been scoring goals, their defence has also been caught napping at times, and it is for that reason they have conceded 18 goals in 15 matches so far this season.

All eyes will be on striker Lehlohonolo Majoro, who recently joined the Clever Boys from Cape Town City.

Majoro wasted a few good chances on his debut, but Hunt is most likely to retain the former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates man in his starting line-up.

“I thought he [Majoro] was fantastic against Free State Stars. He worked his socks off. He had a great chance to score," Hunt told the media.

“He should have scored in the first half, the second half, unbelievable the chances he missed,” he added.

Daine Klate and Thulani Hlatshwayo will also be expected to play an influential role against the 2017 Caf Confederation Cup finalists.

Meanwhile, Eric Tinkler faces a similar situation to that of Hunt as he hasn't won in his last five matches.

The last time Matsatsantsa won a league match was against Ajax Cape Town in November 2017. Since then, they have recorded two defeats and three draws.

They are currently placed 12th on the log, and a win over Wits will see them move up to 10th on the standings.

Tinkler though, is aware that their game against Wits will not be a walk in the park.

“There are no easy games in this league, everybody can beat anyone. We saw how Sundowns lost to Polokwane City at the weekend,” Tinkler said.

“You can’t take anything for granted right now. Yes, Wits are sitting at the bottom of the league, but if they win two or three games in a row, then they find themselves up there," added Tinkler.

Jeremy Brockie's future continues to hog the headlines, but Tinkler is likely to play him as he remains the club's most reliable striker.

A few youngsters such as Sipho Mbule and Teboho Mokoena have raised their hands on a number of occasions, and their presence in midfield will no doubt bring about stability in the team.

The pace of Thuso Phala on the wing is what's likely to expose Wits' defensive frailties, and Sifiso Hlanti will have to be on his toes throughout the game.

In head-to-head stats, the two teams have met 27 times in all competitions since 2004. Wits have registered 10 wins to SuperSport's nine, while eight matches have ended in draws.
