Benni McCarthy: Aubrey Ngoma is in the league of Shoes Moshoeu and Doctor Khumalo

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy isn’t surprised that his star player has been linked with a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January given his mesmerizing quality on the field of play.

“It’s normal, anyone would like to sign a player who gives them a lot of headaches. I understand. If I was in the Yellow Submarine’s (Sundowns) shoes, I would also want to have Aubrey on my side because he is a rare talent that we have in South Africa,” McCarthy told IOL.

Ngoma nearly made the move to Downs at the end of last season, and it led chairman John Comitis publicly lashing out at the club for approaching the player behind the club's back.

McCarthy believes Ngoma’s ability to read the game and take players on reminds him of late Shoes Moshoeu and Doctor Khumalo.

“When it comes to intelligence, reading the game and being able to know when to take on players, he is in the league of Shoes Moshoeu and Doctor Khumalo. I am throwing those names about because they were the crème de la crème when I was coming through,” McCarthy said.

The Citizens ended the year second on the table following their 1-0 win over Sundowns, and McCarthy cannot hide his joy at their success so far.

“My first six months as head coach have been up and down, but to end the year, the first half of the season, in second place ahead of many bigger teams than us - small Cape Town City - I am very happy with that,” McCarthy concluded.
