    WHAT HAPPENED?

South Africa started their 2025 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations Group B campaign with a 4-3 win over Egypt at Larbi Zaouli Stadium on Monday night.

Goals from Neo Bohloko (brace), Simphiwe Mlondo of Mamelodi Sundowns and Emile Witbooi earned Amajimbos a come-from-behind victory over the Young Pharaohs in Casablanca, Morocco.

Hamza Abdelkarim and Anas Roshdi (brace) netted Egypt's three goals on the night. Cape Town City's Witbooi was named Man of the Match after scoring and providing an assist.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At the tender age of 16, Bohloko has proven to be a reliable goalscorer for South Africa's youth national teams and Kaizer Chiefs since he made his debut in the DStv Diski Challenge as a 14-year-old in January 2023.

The teenage sensation then became the youngest player ever to score a goal in the DStv Diski Challenge when he netted against Golden Arrows as a 14-year-old at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in February 2023.

With Chiefs' first team currently struggling to score goals in the Premier Soccer League, it remains to be seen whether under-fire coach Nasreddine Nabi will consider promoting the talented striker.

Mfundo Vilakazi, Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo are some of the current Amakhosi first-team players, who were promoted from the club's academy as teenagers.

    WHAT NEXT?

Bohloko and his Amajimbos teammates will turn their attention to Thursday's clash against Cameroon in another Group B encounter at Larbi Zaouli Stadium.

A win for South Africa over the Young Indomitable Lions would see coach Vela Khumalo's side take a big step towards progressing to the Afcon knockout phase and also qualifying for the 2025 Fifa U17 World Cup finals.

The top 10 teams from the Afcon tournament will qualify for the World Cup finals to be hosted by Qatar as the African representatives.
