    WHAT HAPPENED?

Upington City boss David Mogashoa has stated that the club will support former Kaizer Chiefs winger Kgaogelo Sekgota, who is in a rehabilitation centre.

Sekgota has been admitted to the Achievers Rehabilitation Centre in Limpopo for drug abuse, and his current club has vowed to stand with him during his recovery process.

    WHAT MOGASHOA SAID

“You can’t dismiss a player because he is in rehab, so he still has an option with us,” Mogashoa told FARPost.

“The player needs support, so I am going to support him. As I speak with you now, you can hear that I am in a car. I am driving to Limpopo to see him. You don’t throw away people when they need help; you support them," he added.

“We are encouraging him, and we also encourage everyone who has an issue to seek help. A player must never be crucified for seeking help. That’s why I am driving to Limpopo now to go and see him."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sekgota joined Chiefs in July 2021 but joined Stellenbosch following a rather unsuccessful stint with Amakhosi.

The winger, who made his Bafana Bafana debut in the 2019 COSAFA Cup against Uganda, stayed at Stellies for six months before he was released, reportedly for breaching the club's code of conduct.

His next works station was Magesi FC, but the Limpopo-based club released him after six months.

Sekgota is said to have attracted interest from a Moroccan club, but that deal did not see the light of day, as he was admitted to the rehab centre in Polokwane.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SEKGOTA?

As he undertakes his recovery process at the rehabilitation centre, his teammates are focusing on the pre-season.

Upington City, who faced a tough 2024/25 National First Division campaign and narrowly escaped relegation, hope to have a better campaign next season.

For now, Mogashoa's assurance of support is what the winger mostly needs now as he hopes to recover and kick the ball again.
