Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad: Dan Burn in as Marcus Rashford & Jordan Henderson return for 2026 World Cup qualifying duty but Harry Maguire & Jack Grealish miss out through injury

Former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss Tuchel officially took charge of the Three Lions on January 1. His first piece of business will be 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia, with the German coach having penned an 18-month contract through to the end of next summer’s finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Tuchel’s first selection, having initially drawn up a 55-man longlist, includes a maiden call-up for Newcastle defender Burn – with the towering 32-year-old, who is preparing for Carabao Cup final duty on Sunday, able to operate at centre-half and left-back.

Rashford, who has 60 senior caps to his name, is recalled after making a bright start to his loan spell at Aston Villa after severing ties with Manchester United during the winter transfer window. He is joined in the attacking ranks by prolific Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, who will be hoping to retain captaincy duties.

Veteran defender Kyle Walker, who was also on the move in January as he left Manchester City for a stint at Serie A giants AC Milan, is included alongside former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who is now on the books at Ajax.

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, who has previously savoured European U21 Championship glory with England, is selected after racking up the clean sheets with Burnley this season in their push for promotion into the Premier League. Chelsea defender Reece James and Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke also get the nod.

Manchester United centre-half Maguire and City playmaker Grealish are among those nursing knocks. The same applies to Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, Red Devils left-back Luke Shaw, Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka and City defender John Stones.

Chelsea forward Noni Madueke is also unavailable through injury, as is Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and Newcastle defender Lewis Hall. They will all be hoping to play their way back into contention at some stage.

Others to miss out on the start of a new era for England include Nottingham Forest pair Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who have been in fine form for the top four-chasing Reds, Tottenham playmaker James Maddison and ex-Brentford frontman Ivan Toney – who is now playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ahli.

Tuchel’s reign will open with back-to-back outings at Wembley Stadium. England are due to face Albania on March 21, before then playing host to Latvia three days later. Their other fixtures in qualification Group K will come against Serbia and Andorra.
