Soweto Derby: Yusuf Maart's stunner ends Kaizer Chiefs' decade-long trophy drought after humbling Orlando Pirates in Nedbank Cup final thriller

Kaizer Chiefs went ahead when Gaston Sirino beat Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine from the penalty spot 10 minutes into the contest.

This was after Deano van Rooyen was adjudged to have tripped a charging Pule Mmodi inside the box.

But Evidence Makgopa replied for the Buccaneers seven minutes later by heading in a Deon Hotto freekick.

Seven days earlier, Makgopa was on target for Pirates to equalise in a Premier Soccer League Soweto Derby, which the Buccaneers went on to win 2-1.

But this time his goal counted little as Chiefs reclaimed their lead with 10 minutes remaining when Yusuf Maart volleyed home after being set up by Ashley du Preez.

It was a memorable evening for Nasreddine Nabi's Chiefs, who won 2-1 and lifted a major trophy for the first time since 2015.

In a season he has been blowing hot and cold, Maart came through for Chiefs on an occasion where it mattered the most.

He showed some commendable leadership skills and carried his teammates while spicing the evening with a well-taken goal.

To further spice it up, he became the first Chiefs captain in a decade to lead them to a big trophy.

A few weeks ago, Pirates had a chance to end this season with a treble after having already won the MTN8 title earlier this season.

But the Caf Champions League semi-final exit, Nedbank Cup final defeat by Chiefs and the Premier Soccer League title bid which is not in their hands have spoiled their season.

It is also a bitter end to outgoing coach Jose Riveiro's tenure at the Soweto giants' coach as he had wanted to bow out on a high.

Amakhosi will now travel to Limpopo with their heads held high to meet Sekhukhune United in a Premier Soccer League match next Saturday.

But Pirates will be back in action on Tuesday with the hosting of Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium.
