It is a long-standing practice for a number of South African teams to have their own sangoma (traditional header) that prepares muti (herbs) for the team to overcome their opponent.Stories of players taking part in rituals is well documented, and the latest reveal comes from former Orlando Pirates midfielder Teko Modise. 'The General', who won two back-to-back PSL Footballer of the Season crowns with the Buccaneers opened up about how he and his teammates were subjected to bath in stench-ridden, muti-infested water the night before the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Amakhosi and the Buccaneers square off again this weekend and Chiefs interim coach, Cavin Johnson has already alluded to the use of muti in the PSL. The veteran mentor - although in a light-hearted tone - <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/soweto-derby-looming-instead-of-going-to-one-sangoma-they-go-to-five-cavin-johnson-on-kaizer-chiefs-opponents/bltadffc9f5a352e22c" target="_blank">suggested that Pirates and PSL defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns consult up to five sangomas</a>.However, Chiefs go into the tie with their chins up as they finally scored a goal in 2024 after young sensation Wandile Duba netted a stunner against Golden Arrows on Tuesday night.Pirates, meanwhile, will go into the Derby ahead of Chiefs on the PSL log as Amakhosi are sitting in sixth position ahead of the Buccaneers' tie with Cape Town Spurs on Wednesday evening.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

"At night we would bath [with muti] but we would still lose and this was because when we got back to the room we would wash it [the muti] off because it was itchy,"<a href="https://youtu.be/CiGyxELMJ94?si=AhXOzCuh5ymQWDHk" target="_blank"> Modise said on SuperSport Unplugged</a>."Then they started realizing that when we got back to our rooms we would bathe, so they changed the ritual to after the pre-match meal, just before we got into the bus and went to the stadium. "But that was a problem because the whole kit was wet [soaked in muti] and you are itching, it does not smell nice and you still lose the game," he added.

WHAT WAS SAID 

"It made no sense because there were a lot of divisions in our teams, there were a lot of believers (Christians) and some who did not believe in those kinds of things. Some asked why we train so hard only to use muti," said Modise. "They would come to our training venue, the Joburg Stadium and close the changing room and light up something that got our eyes red by the time you got out," added 'The General', who was a darling at the Buccaneers before he went on to enjoy a lot of success with Mamelodi Sundowns.

AND WHAT ELSE

Pirates and Chiefs' last five competitive games saw Amakhosi win three of those while the Sea Robbers claimed two wins. The last competitive draw between the Soweto rivals was in 2019 in the Telkom Knockout (today branded the Carling Knockout) where Leonardo Castro, Daniel Cardoso, Fortune Makaringe and Gabadinho Mhango were all on target. The sides were separated on penalties as Chiefs won 4-2.That is all in the past, however, as a new chapter of South Africa's most prestigious game will be written at the FNB Stadium this Saturday at 15h30.
