SHOCKING! Mamelodi Sundowns set to miss the Champions League for the first time

The South African heavyweights are set to miss out the annual continental competition after a poor outing.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies suffered a shock 2-1 loss against Zesco Ndola Girls in the COSAFA Club Championships semi-finals to bow out of the competition.

    Banyana Ba Style broke the deadlock in the stroke of halftime courtesy of Boitumelo Rabale to take a deserved lead to the break.

    However, Enerless Phiri capitalised on Andile Dlamini's mistake to make it 1-1 just eight minutes after the restart.

    Frieda Kabwe then scored the winner in the 88th minute, moments after Melinda Kgadiete had missed a glorious opportunity to win it for the South African outfit.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    This loss means Mamelodi Sundowns will miss out on the CAF Women's Champions League for the first time. 

    It will also be a wake-up call for the team and the management to freshen up the squad to avoid such incidents in the future.

    Goalkeeper Andile Dlamini should also analyse her performances since the recently-completed AWCON in Morocco.

    Zesco Ndola Girls will now play Gaborone United in the final, which will be played on Sunday at AW Muller Stadium.

    The Sundowns can at least win a bronze when they play Costa Do Sol in the third-place play-offs.
