Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney sent ‘bigger club’ & not ‘world beaters’ message ahead of Wrexham’s clash with fellow League One promotion hopefuls

The Red Dragons, who have enjoyed quite the journey under their Hollywood co-owners, will return to SToK Racecourse on Tuesday when playing host to fellow promotion hopefuls. They head into that game sat second in the third tier table, with 23 points collected from 11 games.

Reynolds and McElhenney are determined to deliver Premier League football at some stage, and that is a level which Huddersfield have already graced. With that in mind, the Terriers will be travelling to North Wales confident that they can quieten some of the noise that Wrexham continue to generate.

Huddersfield boss Michael Duff has said: “In terms of stature of club, we’re a bigger club than them, I don’t think that’s being disrespectful, but the one thing they’ve got is momentum and confidence. They’re hard things [to build], we’ve found that ourselves in this run that we’ve been in.

“It’s decision making through a lack of confidence, and a lack of trust in each other almost. They’ve got total trust in each other because of the journey that they’ve been on. It’s a brilliant story, but they haven’t become world beaters. We need to go there with an arrogance of ‘we are a big team in this league’, and go and deliver that, and that’s part of the expectation. It’s going to be a real challenge, because we’ve not only got to beat 11, 15, 16 good players, but you’ve got to beat the crowd as well. You’ve got to try and silence them and keep them quiet.”

Wrexham have been faultless on home soil this season, taking maximum points from five fixtures, and Duff added on facing that challenge: “I think we just need to add consistency. We won four games, then we lost a load, and we’ve just won three on the spin. We’re searching ourselves for a level of consistency, even within games as well sometimes.

“They’re five from five at home this year, so if we can be the first team [to take points off them there], that will be a marker, and hopefully we can go and do it, knowing how difficult it will be, but it will give our lads a shot in the arm as well if we can get the result.”

Huddersfield, who spent two seasons in the Premier League between 2017 and 2019, sit sixth in the League One table as things stand. They are five points back on Wrexham, but expect to be in the automatic promotion mix when the 2024-25 campaign comes to a close.
