    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns are under Miguel Cardoso who replaced Manqoba Mngqithi in December 2024.

But the Portuguese coach has been grinding results before guiding Masandawana to losing to Raja Casablanca last weekend.

Former Sundowns and Orlando Pirates midfielder Lebohang Mokoena feels the Brazilians are not invincible and can be beaten if teams make use of a certain weakness they have.

    WHAT MOKOENA SAID

"I've always been saying this, teams here back home don't take those chances and try press Sundowns really high," Mokoena said as per KickOff.

"You could see those mistakes. Even the game of Sundowns and [Kaizer] Chiefs, where they actually won 4-0, Chiefs actually did the pressing high up, got chances and unfortunately, they did not convert.

"Some of the [Sundowns] players are not as comfortable and you could see it [against Raja], that there is a weakness somewhere, somehow and a lot of teams will pick that up and say, 'Come on, guys, let's go pound for pound," added the former footballer nicknamed Cheeseboy.

"Yes, there are gonna be instances where they will come out, but if you keep on and keep on, you'll finally get that chance, where you can just bury one goal, which will open the game, instead of you sitting back all the time. I think Raja showed us something like that."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In recent years, Sundowns would qualify for the Caf Champions League knockouts with a group game or two to spare but they are currently struggling in Group B where they are second.

They lost their first match in that pool last weekend when they were beaten 1-0 by Raja Casablanca away.

The Brazilians are also being closely contested for the Premier Soccer League title by Orlando Pirates, unlike the past seasons where they would have opened a huge gap by now.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

The Brazilians are currently preparing to visit Maniema Union for the penultimate Champions League Group B game on Saturday.

It is a game they are pressed to win to recover from the defeat by Raja and also boost their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.
