OFFICIAL: Cape Town Spurs lose another 'diamond' as Kaizer Chiefs legend welcomes Bafana Bafana utility player

  • Bern set free

Cape Town City's situation got worse after the Premier Soccer League Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) declared Liam Bern a free agent.

This was another case that Spurs mounted in an attempt to cling to the Bafana Bafana star, who wanted to leave the club and find greener pastures elsewhere.

Just after the PSL DRC judgement was made, Usuthu confirmed that they have added him to their ranks.

"Cape Town–born midfielder Liam Bern (22) has officially joined the Arthur Zwane–coached AmaZulu FC after being declared a free agent on transfer deadline day," the club's statement read.

    Bern's target

The versatile left-footer has expressed joy after being confirmed as a member of the Usuthu fraternity and revealed his dream.

“I spoke to a lot of players before I came here, and they always told me how much they wanted to join AmaZulu because of the family culture, how well the players are looked after, and the togetherness within the club," Bern told the club's website.

"The supporters have also been incredible - their energy carries through the entire game, and they really seem like amazing people," he added.

"On a personal level, I’d love to score at least one goal this season and, more importantly, win a trophy with the team."

    Legal battle cleared

Bern's arrival at Usuthu was just a formality, as he had been heavily linked with the Durban-based outfit.

What AmaZulu waited for was for the legal hurdle – the contract case between the player and Spurs at DRC – to be cleared in order to officially announce the player as one of their own.

Bern now joins Usuthu, where he will work under former Kaizer Chiefs head coach, Arthur Zwane.

    Big blow to Spurs

This is another blow to the amateur side, as they have lost key players owing to their relegation to the lower league.

After dropping to the ABC Motsepe League Western Cape, their players, legally, became free agents, as per the rules that govern the game. However, the club did not take such attempts by their players lying low, as they fought vehemently, but in the end, they were unsuccessful.

Other players who were declared free agents are Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman, who have already been signed by Kaizer Chiefs.
