The 25-year-old was a surprise omission from the South Africa squad that did duty at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Ivory Coast where they finished third. Even after Lyle Foster and Lebo Mothiba were ruled out of the tournament, Mayo still found no place in Broos' side. Broos has now moved in to justify why he overlooked the Cape Town City star.

WHAT HAPPENED?

“I'm not totally convinced a 25-year-old player is totally developed — I don't agree with that,” Broos said as per <a href="https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/sport/soccer/2024-02-20-mayo-has-to-work-on-weakness-broos-on-bafana-snub-of-psls-top-scorer/" target="_blank">Sowetan Live</a>.“Again, if Mayo starts now to work on his weaknesses, he will become better. But you don't have to wait two more years because by then he will be finished. But it's still possible now. As a 25-year-old, normally you need to be developed. "But OK, some guys [develop] later than others, while others are already developed. At 20 or 22 years old, you already say, 'What a player!' But it's about talent. But [in the case of Mayo] there are certain things you can work on, important things," he added."Maybe [such improvements would come] if you have those individual training sessions [for strikers] and I think maybe here in South Africa we have to train more with individuals, certainly with younger players.“You may know that this guy is a striker but his first control is bad. OK, work on it. It doesn't mean that after training he has to go home [immediately] because he's young.“And it's not the physical training but it's just a technical training. And you can [progress] a lot by doing that, certainly with young boys from 20 to 22 years," the Belgian continued."Players grow faster when you do that, especially when they have the talent. Sometimes you think you can do individual training but the player can't be better because he doesn't have the talent, or not enough talent.“When we took Mayo for the first time two years ago, I said, 'Ja, we're OK [for a striker]. He can be something for Bafana'. And he was with us three times, but it's a pity we have to say no to Mayo — for the moment.”

WHAT BROOS SAID

Broos suggests Mayo is yet to become a fully developed player despite the player showing a commendable level of consistency in the past two seasons. The City star was last season's joint <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/premier-soccer-league/yv73ms6v1995b5wny16jcfi3" target="_blank">Premier Soccer League</a> top goal-scorer with 12 goals and this season he is chasing the Golden Boot and is currently the league's leading marksman with eight goals.In the past two seasons, he has scored 20 PSL goals and that is 10 more than the combined total, within the same period, between Zakhele Lepasa and Evidence Makgopa who are Broos' trusted strikers.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mayo was on target again on Tuesday when City took on SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 tie. That takes his season tally to nine goals in 18 games across all competitions and he would be hoping that will impress Broos ahead of March's international friendly matches against Andorra and Algeria.
