Kaizer Chiefs winger Asanele Velebayi warns new talent - 'The pressure is going to be high'

    Naturena pressure cooker awaits Abrahams

Kaizer Chiefs starlet Asanele Velebayi has issued a reality check to new arrival Faiz Abrahams, warning the former Stellenbosch man that life in the gold and black is a completely different beast.

Abrahams has checked in at Naturena on a season-long loan with an option to buy, linking up with Fernando Da Cruz ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.

It is a massive step up for the youngster, who now finds himself under the microscope at a club desperate to end their trophy drought.

As the Glamour Boys undergo a ruthless squad overhaul to compete for domestic honours and the CAF Confederation Cup, Velebayi has made it clear that Abrahams must adapt quickly to the unrelenting pressure of the Soweto giants.

A major squad overhaul at Chiefs

Abrahams becomes the third fresh face to arrive at Naturena during this window, following in the footsteps of Thabo Moloisane and Langelihle Phili as the latest talent to swap the Western Cape for the bright lights of Gauteng.

The Glamour Boys' aggressive recruitment drive hasn't stopped there, with former Sekhukhune United shot-stopper Renaldo Leaner and Tanzanian midfield engine Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko also bolstering the ranks.

It has been a calculated rise for Abrahams, whose path to the Amakhosi first team is a testament to his steady development.

After cutting his teeth in the Cape Town Spurs youth system, he made the jump to Stellenbosch, where he emerged as a standout performer in the DStv Diski Challenge.

His rapid progression eventually forced the hand of the senior coaching staff, leading to a professional debut against none other than his new employers during the business end of the 2024/25 campaign.

    Velebayi welcomes his former teammate

The 21-year-old’s stock rose significantly on the international stage, playing a pivotal role in the South Africa U-20 side that secured AFCON glory in Egypt earlier this year.

Following his meteoric rise and high-profile switch to Naturena, former Spurs teammate Velebayi has urged the clinical attacker to keep his feet on the ground and remain laser-focused on his development at Chiefs.

“With Faiz, I’ve known him [for a long time], so having him here is good because it helps you give your best because you know there is competition; you can’t be comfortable any day,” Velebayi said, as quoted on FARPost.

He recognises that while the arrival of a friend is positive, it also raises the stakes for every winger currently in the squad.

The secret to surviving the Soweto spotlight

“So having Faiz here is a positive because I know the magic that he has, and I know that he’s going to help us a lot.

"I spoke to him and told him that the pressure is going to be high, but try to control what you can, which is staying calm and giving the best to the team,” Velebayi added.

The pressure is on for the 2026-27 campaign, with the spotlight firmly fixed on how Abrahams adjusts to life at his new club and whether he can deliver the 'magic' Velebayi has promised.

With a grueling schedule across both the league and the CAF Confederation Cup, the squad's depth and psychological grit are set for the ultimate litmus test.
