    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Orlando Pirates star Jabu Mahlangu has advised Kaizer Chiefs to sign Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise.

Mahlangu, who also featured for Amakhosi, says the South African midfielder has the necessary experience that can help the Soweto giants.

He feels that Mkhulise has not played regularly enough because of the stiff competition at the Tshwane giants.

    WHAT MAHLANGU SAID

"He (Mkhulise) is a player I like very much, although I feel he could have done better. I mean, he arrived (promoted) at Sundowns in the 2018/19 season," Mahlangu told KickOff.

"He played 103 matches, scored six goals, and assisted four. His best season was the following one, where he played 22 games, scored four goals, and assisted one. In the Caf Champions League, he played 35 games, scored four goals, and assisted one.

"So he is a player that I think since 2018, he should have played more games. At Sundowns, there is a lot of quality, but I like him.  Maybe he can go help there in Naturena (Kaizer Chiefs) because things are not going well there. With the experience that he has from the Champions League and the experience of winning trophies."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amakhosi are definitely going to sign and strengthen their playing unit, especially given that they have struggled this season.

Currently, they are being linked with several players, including Oswin Appollis and Fawaaz Basadien, who have also been linked with Orlando Pirates.

Apart from Mkhulise, Sundowns have Marcelo Allende, Neo Maema, Teboho Mokoena, and Sipho Mbule as midfield alternatives. With all these other options available, the Tshwane giants may decide not to extend the midfielder's contract, making him available for other clubs.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MKHULISE?

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, his next steps will be closely watched.

For now though, he has to focus on the assignments ahead, including a Nedbank Cup semi-final duel against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
