After being appointed the new Harambee Stars coach, Francis Kimanzi has to work on some areas to help the team be competitive again.
The former Mathare United tactician has a chance of making the team realise its potential and become one of the best sides in East Africa and the continent at large.

He has to make a better version than the one left behind by Frenchman Sebastien Migne.

Kimanzi was the assistant to Migne and should look at how to turn around the fortunes of the team with his immediate task being the away match against Egypt in the 2021 Afcon qualifiers.

Harambee Stars: Francis Kimanzi's five-point plan to improve Kenya

Patrick Matasi is the current first-choice custodian with the likes of Farouk Shikalo and Ian Otieno yet to hit the maturity levels, which is the same for Jeff Oyemba and Brian Bwire.

During the 2019 Afcon qualifiers, the former Tusker and Posta Rangers keeper&nbsp;made some top-notch saves, and his blunders sometimes went unpunished, but they have been costly, such as during the 1-0 away defeat by Ghana. 
&nbsp; 
At the Afcon, Matasi was to blame for the second goal conceded against Tanzania, while he also went on to misjudge a cross against Senegal - it proved decisive.
A goalkeeper has to be consistent, as when he makes critical errrors, he becomes a burden to the squad.

The likes of Patrick Odhiambo of Gor Mahia and&nbsp;Farouk Shikhalo of Yanga SC are given the opportunity.

Improve goalkeeping department

Kenya have&nbsp;never had a problem in this department...until recently. The country had the likes of Edwin Wafula, Musa Mohammed, David Owino playing very well in the position, but latterly, there have been problems.
The last two have been converted to central position while the former fizzled out, and while Philemon Otieno excelled playing in that position at Gor Mahia under coach Dylan Kerr, he's struggled recently.

After putting in a great showing against Ghana’s Black Stars in the 1-0 win at Kasarani, Otieno sustained an injury, and since then he has failed to regain his form. At the Afcon, the position was exploited&nbsp;by the opposing attackers, with Otieno struggling to cope, he looked nervous and conceded silly fouls.

When Owino was called to cover up against Tanzania, he struggled as well, and Taifa Stars capitalized on the mistakes.

Kimanzi has to find someone who can make the position his own. David Owino of Mathare United has been doing well in the same position, but will he be considered?

Improve the right-back

It is high-time Kenyans accept captain Victor Wanyama's days as Kenya's orchestrator-in-chief&nbsp;are over, he cannot run the Harambee Stars' engine effectively. Dennis Odhiambo, Ismael Gonzalez and Erick Johanna, by contrast, did an excellent job against Ghana in the qualifiers.
They dominated the midfield and bossed it, and while Odhiambo may be coming towards the end of his impact,&nbsp;Gonzalez and Johanna have their best&nbsp;days ahead.

At the Afcon, Johanna Omollo was the star man;&nbsp;he was the only player who knew what to do and at what time, bailing out his captain on several occasions and even managed to nab a goal.

Instead of Wanyama, Kimanzi should consider building his team around Gonzalez, Omollo, and Johanna, as they can help Kenya grab the elusive World Cup slot.

Stabilise the midfield

It is obvious, that without Michael Olunga, Kenya are&nbsp;limited in attacking areas.&nbsp;The likes of Jesse Were and the local strikers have not impressed when given a chance, with the Chan defeat by Tanzania a good recent example.&nbsp;
Kenyan Premier League top scorer Enosh Ochieng was another failed project, then came Sydney Lokale who looked like a pedestrian, while Piston Mutamba didn't truly get a chance.

Kenya have prospects in the league who have demonstrated they can be relied on when sharpened.

Derrick Otanga of Wazito FC and Nicholas Kipkirui of Gor Mahia could&nbsp;be transformed into effective central strikers, as could Hansel Ochieng and John Avire.

Unveil another striker

Almost all of the top sides in the world have a specific system, underpinned by a consistent philosophy.
It might be a passing game which involves build-ups from the back, or use of long balls, direct football, or quick interchanges.

In Kenya, there is no such overarching strategy, and it is a shame to say even the players get confused when they are under pressure or when the coach comes up with new rules during the game.

Kimanzi loves 'good' football, slick passing and wing play. He loves fast and accurate passing, and Kenya have the players to execute this.

The main objective will be to try and help introduce such a&nbsp;style into the national team, certainly, Kenya deserves its own footballing identity.
