  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Xhaka’s potential move to Milan is falling apart. Despite the midfielder giving the green light, the club is stepping back due to concerns over his age, high wages, and a significant transfer fee from Bayer Leverkusen. Talks have slowed, and the Rossoneri are now focusing on younger midfielders instead.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Milan have traditionally built their squad around younger players with long-term potential and affordable wages. Xhaka, while experienced and reliable, doesn't fit this strategy. With Modric already expected to join after the Club World Cup, Milan are unlikely to bring in another veteran, especially one with a high cost.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The Swiss international was seen as a potential leader in Massimiliano Allegri's midfield rebuild, but the club already see Modric as the experienced anchor. Milan’s midfield next season could feature Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Youssouf Fofana and possible new signing Samuele Ricci - all players under 30.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MILAN?

Unless Leverkusen lower their asking price or Xhaka agrees to a pay cut, Milan will likely walk away from the deal. Instead, they’re pushing forward with Ricci and staying in close contact with Valencia for Javi Guerra, for whom they have already submitted a €20 million (£17m/$23m) bid, bonuses included. The Rossoneri are reportedly considering making a new offer in the coming days.
