Pirates are second on the Premier Soccer League table with 13 points fewer than log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.The Brazilians have, however, played two games less than the Soweto giants.Mhlongo feels it is a gap the Buccaneers can close in their remaining 10 league matches.

WHAT HAPPENED?

"What I like is that the boys are growing under Jose," Mhlongo told <a href="https://www.snl24.com/kickoff/sanews/premiership/orlando-pirates/former-pirates-captain-mhlongo-backs-bucs-for-miracle-league-championship-triumph-20240315">KickOff.</a> "Sundowns is starting to drop points. Pirates, they cannot say the league is gone. They have to fight until the last day. "Just like in life, in football you cannot give up. You have to finish the race. If you finish the race, you might end up winning the trophy. They are number two on the table, so they have to go for it. They can still win it. Pirates just need to win their games," the former Bafana Bafana star added. "Remember what happened to Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns in one of the league title races. If Sundowns gave up and decided to give game-time to their fringe players, they wouldn't have overtaken Kaizer Chiefs at the last minute like they did. "Pirates still need to win the championship for their fans, but to achieve that they will need to keep the culture of winning and leave the rest to God."

WHAT MHLONGO SAID

Pirates have not won the PSL title since the 2011/12 season and that puts them under pressure to end that long period without being crowned champions.In their remaining 10 league games, some of their notable fixtures include facing Sekhukhune United, Cape Town City and SuperSport United.Their title challengers Sundowns still have to play against Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch, Cape Town City and Sekhukhune United, as well as teams struggling to avoid relegation Moroka Swallows and Cape Town Spurs.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Having already won the MTN8, the Buccaneers still have a chance to finish the season with a treble should they defend the Nedbank Cup and topple Sundowns from the PSL summit. For now, they focus on the Nedbank Round of 16 as they prepare to host Hungry Lions on Saturday.
