Our analysis: Form of both teams

Stellenbosch haven’t had any notable pre-season games, but their current form suggests vulnerability. The Western Cape outfit lost to Kaizer Chiefs in the opening weekend of the Betway Premiership, indicating lingering issues from last season.

Despite this, their league campaign was strong, as they grabbed a spot to play continental football, which is still a massive achievement for Steve Barker. However, it wasn’t easy as they were pushed all the way by Saturday’s fellow semi-finalists, Sekhukhune United.

Babina Noko lost out on the coveted third place by just three points. Now, with a new head coach guiding the side, it remains to be seen if they can put up a similar challenge. Eric Tinkler has brought in 12 new faces to help his side in the upcoming season.

Some prominent names like Miguel Timm of Orlando Pirates and Bradley Grobler of

SuperSport United are now playing in Limpopo. The new signings have had an almost immediate impact, securing two wins - one over the Buccaneers last weekend.

Probable lineups for Stellenbosch vs Sekhukhune United

Stellenbosch expected lineup: Stephens; Godswill, Nkwali, Moloisane, Mdaka; Titus, Butsaka, Palace, Barns; Cupido, De Jong

Sekhukhune United expected lineup: Leaner; Cardoso, Thokolo, Letlapa; Matsimbi, Monare, Mkhize, Mncube; Mntambo, Makgalwa, Grobler

Low-scoring trend to continue

Goals aren’t the hallmark of either of these sides. Last season’s league campaign saw the hosts score 34 goals in 28 games, while the visitors scored 39 times. At home, Stellies scored exactly 14 goals in 14 games, though they didn’t always play at the Danie Craven Stadium due to pitch renovations.

Both sides saw most of their PSL games end with fewer than two goals. Notably, 17 of Sekhukhune’s 28 league matches and 19 of Stellenbosch’s games produced under two goals. The trend is even more pronounced for Stellenbosch when they’re at home.

Of 14 games in their backyard, 11 ended with fewer than two goals scored (79%). Two of Stellies’ last three games finished with under two goals, and three of Sekhukhune United’s last five outings followed the same pattern. Additionally, four of the previous five head-to-heads ended with under two goals.

Knee slides and more

Although the PSL is utterly goal-shy, these two have enough in their respective attacking arsenal to get some joy out of the other. The home side will count on Devin Titus to push them forward here, as he was the joint third-highest scorer in the division last season with eight goals.

Two of the home side’s last four outings saw both teams score, and that is a likely scenario this weekend. The visitors haven’t failed to score in their previous nine outings, and with the addition of Grobler, they should be a threat in the final third.

With an average of just over a goal per away game last term, you wouldn’t bet against Babina Noko finding the net here. Both Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune United celebrated goals in each of their last three head-to-heads.

History of draws

It’s difficult to pick a winner in this match, especially since they were closely matched last season. The hosts claim the only win from the last five encounters decided within 90 minutes.

The last nine meetings between the sides produced a draw seven times (78%), with Sekhukhune winning one meeting in 2023. Among those stalemates, five ended 1-1 (71%), and two remained goalless (29%).

All signs point towards another stalemate in the Winelands, with Tinkler’s charges happy to take the tie back to Limpopo level on terms.
