Our analysis: Form of both teams

AmaZulu are likely disappointed after being knocked out of the Carling Knockout Cup just before the international break. It’s about how they respond to that disappointment that matters. The Usuthu must now turn their attention to the league, where they sit ninth in the standings.

Coach Arthur Zwane has been building a decent team in Durban. The problem is, most of their good work has come inside their home town. AmaZulu’s weak spot this season has been their away form.

Zwane will be relieved to see his team back on home turf for the return to Betway Premiership action. Yet, derbies are hardly ever straightforward, and the hosts must prepare for the visit of the high-flying Durban City this weekend.

Since its rebrand from Maritzburg United to Durban City, the club have enjoyed a strong run of form. They were promoted to the Premier Soccer League from the National First Division last season. Now, they’re under the guidance of veteran coach Gavin Hunt.

The former SuperSport United boss has propelled them to fourth in the standings. The Citizens are level on points with Orlando Pirates and six away from Mamelodi Sundowns. However, they’re only three ahead of AmaZulu, which highlights the need for their positive run to continue here.

Head-to-head history of low-scoring affairs

AmaZulu have netted eight league goals in as many games this term. They have never failed to score when playing at home, while both teams only found the net in 33% of their home games. The Usuthu have now scored in each of their last six matches in a row.

While their offence is decent at home, Durban City’s overall scoring record is slightly better. The visitors scored 10 goals in nine games, averaging 1.11 goals per game. Seven of their nine PSL fixtures returned fewer than three goals on the day (78%).

Meanwhile, six of the hosts’ eight league matches ended with under three goals scored. The previous eight competitive head-to-heads between these clubs saw the goal count reach a maximum of two.

  • AmaZulu vs Durban City Betting Tip 1: Overs/unders - under 2.5 goals at odds of 1.43 on Betway

Usuthu to hold onto their home record

AmaZulu are a strong outfit in their backyard. They thoroughly enjoy playing in front of the home fans and have yet to disappoint this season. All three league games at home produced victories for Zwane’s charges.

Meanwhile, Hunt’s troops have struggled on the road this term. They’ve won just one of their five away dates and lost twice in that run (D2). City have also conceded at least one goal per PSL away fixture this season.

However, the visitors enter this weekend in strong form, remaining unbeaten in their last three matches (W2, D1). The hosts lost two of their last three, including their Carling Knockout Cup exit.

Picking a winner from a derby like this is difficult, which is why we look to the past. Six of their last nine meetings ended in stalemates (67%). Considering the form of both teams, another deadlock could be on the cards.

  • AmaZulu vs Durban City Betting Tip 2: First goal - AmaZulu at odds of 2.00 on Betway

Laying the first glove

The hosts are likely to strike first. Zwane’s men opened the scoring in 75% (6) of their PSL matches at any venue. However, at home, the Usuthu have scored first in every game this season.

In slight contrast, Durban City scored first in five of their nine matches. They allowed their opponents the first hit in 22% of their fixtures at any ground, and 20% of away games specifically.

AmaZulu have a 100% defensive rate when taking a lead at home this season. Therefore, Hunt’s men will have their work cut out for them, as they fight back to take a point from this weekend.
