<p>Southgate <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/gareth-southgate-resigns-as-england-manager-emotional-statement-after-euro-2024-final-heartbreak/bltd1a723cfd0ac920e" target="_blank">resigned as England manager</a> just a matter of days after their<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/sexy-football-back-england-inspiration-spain-euro-2024-preparing-2026-world-cup/bltea9e19a341775f12" target="_blank"> Euro 2024 final loss to Spain</a>. With the search now on for his successor, ex-United States international Lalas has joked that the former Middlesbrough boss should take up the vacant role at the USMNT as lifting trophies there is a more realistic prospect.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>When asked on X if Southgate should become the Stars and Stripes' next manager, he tweeted: "No problem with Southgate for #USMNT. WHAT ALEXI LALAS SAID

<p>Both England and the U.S. are looking for a new manager, with the latter<a href="https://www.goal.com/en-cm/lists/usmnt-gregg-berhalter-winners-losers/blted3d9a0194e80230" target="_blank"> firing Gregg Berhalter earlier this month</a>. Southgate has proven to be the Three Lions' most successful coach since Sir Alf Ramsey led them to the 1966 World Cup, but now his <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/gareth-southgate-must-walk-away-england-new-direction-glorious-failure-euro-2024/blt97fcabab5bc40ce1" target="_blank">near eight-year era has come to an end</a>. The 53-year-old took them to two European Championship finals and one World Cup semi-final but he couldn't deliver the international trophy the nation craved.</p>

<p>While the U.S. have been looking for Berhalter's successor for nearly a week, England's search for a new boss has just begun. One man who <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/jurgen-klopp-rejects-u-s-soccer-usmnt-head-coach/blt26892c834a432226" target="_blank">won't be leading the Stars and Stripes is ex-Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp</a>, who reportedly rebuffed their advances last week. Getting the right manager for both roles will be key ahead of the 2026 World Cup.</p>
