Firstly, a very big welcome to Cape Town City’s new coach ! These are exciting times for the club with the arrival of South Africa’s most commemorated player, none-other than Mr Benni McCarthy.
The appointment of Benni as the new CT City coach has us all eager for the new season to start. I’ve been inundated with people wanting to know my view on Benni’s appointment, so here’s my two cents.

From a personal perspective, I’m very excited to start working with Benni because I know his work ethic and passion for football. I think that his appointment will not only bring a breath of fresh air to football in the Mother City but will pave the way for a trend that will see our local coaches being given more opportunities.

A combination of Benni’s passion for football and his support for the growth of local football talent will bring forth some quality football entertainment in South Africa.
I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Eric [Tinkler] well with all his future endeavours and to say thank you for his undeniable contribution to CT city’s success this past season.
What does the future hold for Bongani Zungu?
That said, it is time to change focus to the national team. In case you missed it, Bafana Bafana played two international games which resulted in one victory and one defeat.
Bafana’s game plan against Nigeria was very well executed and they deserved to win, although I think they could have won by a much bigger margin.
The game against Zambia saw our boys perhaps taking their foot off the pedal after scoring, which to me, boils down to this being the overall mentality in South African football.
This could be why we rarely see our national team - and the PSL teams- win with for example 5-0 score lines. It seems to become too drastic to handle. However, I think it worked out well for the coach [Stuart Baxter], as now he can see who he can and cannot use going forward.
And now to my activities this past week. In my last article, I mentioned my plans for the off-season included charitable work at the top of my to-do list.

In an effort to fulfil that commitment, I have been working with - and raising funds- for an organisation called Youth of Maitland (or YOM), which provides food for the underprivileged during Ramadaan.
To play my part, I have auctioned my apparel from the past season. The auction consisted of one item of clothing being put up for auction each day, with people given the day to make their bids. I’m happy to say that this initiative hit the ground running and was very successful.

I am planning to do this again next year, but on a much bigger scale by approaching other players to get involved. I’ve included some photos of our YOM event that took place last week, where I also handed over the CT city apparel to the successful bidders of the auction. Thank you to everyone that supported my auction initiative!
