Platinum Stars ' 15-year stay in the Premier Soccer League has come to an end following their defeat to AmaZulu on Wednesday night.
Their defeat means that they're now 10 points behind 15th-placed SuperSport United with two league games to go before the end of the season, and they cannot catch any of the teams in front of them even if they were to win their remaining matches.
Dikwena's relegation was all but confirmed on Tuesday night when Ajax Cape Town scored a late winner to beat Baroka FC 1-0 in Cape Town.
Roger de Sa's charges had a poor campaign, winning only four of their 28 league games. They drew nine and lost a whopping 15 of those matches, including Wednesday's defeat at home to Usuthu.
Dikwena were first promoted into the PSL in 2003 as HP Silver Stars.
Their name changed to Platinum Stars soon after being crowned Telkom Knockout Cup champions 2006.
They finished as league runnners-up twice - during the 2006/07 and 2012/13 seasons.
Diwena represented South Africa in Caf competitions on several ocassions, and will be remembered around the continent for their famous 2-1 win over African giants Al Ahly in 2008.
At the time, they were first and only South African club to beat Al Ahly under the tutelage of Cavin Johnson, who is now head coach of AmaZulu.
Ironically, it is Johnson who gets to put the final nail in Dikwena's coffin and send them back to the National First Division after 15 years in the top flight.
In an attempt to try and motivate his players, De Sa and his colleagues from a consortium which bought the club from Royal Bafokeng Holdings, offered to give a staggering R10 000.00 bonus to each player for every win and R5 000.00 for a draw.
However, things remained the same as they still couldn't move off the bottom of the table.
