Melis Medo guides Sofapaka past Mount Kenya United in season opener

Melis Medo picked maximum points from his former side as Sofapaka beat Mount Kenya FC 2-1 on Sunday.

Medo joined Batoto ba Mungu from Mount Kenya, formerly Nakumatt after a poor season that saw the side survive the axe from the top tier in a tensed play-off.

Sofapaka took the lead via a well-executed counter attack that was planted to the net by a diving header from George Avira. Sofapaka doubled their lead 10 minutes after resumption after Kepha Awani won a penalty.

Captain Stephen Waruru easily converted in the 55th minute with Sofapaka’s third shot on target to extend Medo’s lead over his former side.

Mount Kenya pulled done back with 10 minutes left to the final whistle after Sofapaka custodian Richard Aimo committed a foul inside his own box.

Lewis Wanami sent Aimo, who was lucky to have completed the game despite the mistake, the wrong side to cut the deficit. Despite a late rally from the host, Sofapaka held their nerves to pick the win and a positive start to the season.
