<p>Jai Opetaia has defeated Mairis Briedis by unanimous decision (117-111, 116-112, 116-112) in what had initially been a controlled, professional manner. Yet, when all seemed lost, Briedis, who had remained largely pedestrian for the first nine rounds, almost clawed victory from the jaws of defeat. The crowd, spoiled with six stoppages in seven fights prior to this clash, grew restless as Opetaia pranced in, out and around the ageing Latvian. The Australian boxer was in control throughout, picking off Briedis, whose couple of years out of the ring showed and the fight appeared to be drifting towards a quiet conclusion.</p><p>Perhaps sensing his boxing career slipping away, Briedis let loose in the tenth round and threatened a miraculous turnaround. The energy sapping out of Opetaia, with blood also streaming out of his nose, seemed to be suddenly coursing through the Latvian who found two sharp uppercuts before the final round. Needing a stoppage, Briedis threw everything he could into the final three minutes but could not find the final blow to send the clinging-on Opetaia to the canvas.</p>

<p>And it is all over! Anthony Carcace has beaten Joe Cordina by TKO to win the IBF super-featherweight world title. Cordina will point to the controversial punch in round three but can have no complaints with Carcace thoroughly deserving the victory.</p>

Today's action ahead of the Fury-Usyk showdown

<p>Hello and welcome to <strong>GOAL’s </strong>live coverage of all today’s boxing action as, for the first time in 25 years, we will have a new, undisputed world heavyweight champion. Britain’s Tyson Fury takes on Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk in one of the most highly anticipated fights this century in what is expected to be a close encounter between two of the most talented boxers of their generation.</p><p>Last time out, Fury was embarrassingly dropped by boxing debutant Francis Ngannou in round three of the Gypsy King’s nervy and controversial points decision over the former UFC champion. Fury holds the WBC heavyweight title and, despite his shaky performance against Ngannou, comes into this fight as the slight bookies favourite.</p><p>Usyk, meanwhile, was also not at his best in his last bout against Daniel Dubois but had enough to knockout his opponent. <p>That brings us to the end of the boxing action for tonight but Fury and Usyk will not be quiet for long. Their rematch cannot come soon enough...</p>

The fire is put out... for now

<p>The most anticipated heavyweight fight in years delivered a showing worthy of the months and years of hype. Fury looked back to his best and in cruise control for much of the early rounds and demonstrated a swagger and arrogance epitomised by his various attempts at showboating.</p><p>But you can never count Oleksandr Usyk out of a battle and the Ukrainian roared back and sent Fury spiralling around the ring, clutching to the ropes and the fight by a thread. The referee could, and some will say should, have stopped the fight there and then but Fury was saved by the referee and the bell.</p><p>The split decision in favour of Usyk was fair, even if Fury disputes its integrity, and reflected an excruciatingly tight contest. The Ring of Fire - Usyk is king of the heavyweights

<p>After being crowned the new undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, Usyk said to <em>DAZN</em>: "Thank you so much to my team and my God, Jesus. His Excellency [Turki Alalshikh], thank you, this is a big opportunity for me. For my family, for my country!</p><p>"It is a great time, it is a great day."</p>

<p>Speaking to <em>DAZN</em> after the fight, Fury said: "I believe I won that fight. I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of them. We put on a good fight. His country is at war, so people are siding with the country at war. Make no mistake, I won that fight in my opinion. We've got a rematch clause [and] I've had a split decision loss to a good little man. We run it back in October. Well done Oleksandr."</p>

<p>With his victory by split decision (115-112, 113-114, 114-113), Usyk has won the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO heavyweight world titles to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis in 1999.</p><p>The eagerly anticipated fight lived up to the billing as the battle swung back and forth from Usyk to Fury. The ninth round will be the key talking point in the coming days, weeks and months as Fury was knocked down and saved by the bell. Usyk's camp argued the fight should have been stopped by the referee but Fury made a customary impossible recovery to remain in the fight.</p><p>On the decision, Fury claims: “People are siding with a country at war.” Although, the suggestion of bias appears unfair with the fight scored rightfully close and the 10-8 round proving crucial in the decision.</p><p>The rematch cannot come soon enough.</p>

<p>The decision of who will become the new undisputed world heavyweight champion lies in the hands of the judges. The knockdown by Usyk in the ninth round could be key but Fury dominated for large spells. The result comes next...</p>

<p>It all comes down to the final round to decide the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Usyk lands an overhand left but Fury responds with a jab. Both exchange strong blows throughout and hurt one another but cannot be separated. Neither can land a knockout blow and an incredible fight comes to a close. Who would want to be a judge?</p>

<p>Into the penultimate round we go and it is impossible to split the pair. Fury had looked so dominant in the earlier rounds but Usyk is on the front foot. Chants of 'Usyk, Usyk, Usyk' return in a reflection of the way the fight is heading but Fury is still in here and bouncing. It goes to the final round.</p>

<p>Fury comes back out from his corner wearily with Usyk measuring up what could be the final, killer blow. He backs Fury into the ropes and then the corner but appears tentative and allows Fury the chance to regather himself and even throw yet another mocking shimmy in the corner. Usyk on top, but this is an incredible display of recovery from Fury who looked on the brink last round.</p>

<p>Fury is dabbing his face with his glove as yet more blood trickles from below his right eye. Usyk, sensing Fury's hurt, goes for another and another overhand left and rocks Fury who is knocked down. The Gypsy King is saved by the bell but was blown away by a huge left hook by Usyk. Trouble for Fury.</p>

<p>The end of the previous round has clearly given Usyk a new lease of confidence as he comes out swinging. Usyk throws a strong right-hand which stuns more than hurts Fury but provides the Ukrainian the impetus to go in search of yet another big hit. Usyk bloodies the face of Fury with another left-hand which could pose a problem for Fury going forward in the fight. </p>

<p>The chants of 'Usyk, Usyk, Usyk' heard in the first couple of rounds have subsided as Fury begins leaning on the smaller fighter. Fury lands a strong right hook to the side of Usyk's face but is matched by an equally strong return. There is a strong finish to the round by Usyk but he has work to do to wrestle control back from a prowling Fury.</p>

<p>Usyk is in need of a response after three strong rounds from Fury edge the British boxer in front. He evades a few wild efforts from Fury and begins chasing Fury around the ring. Fury responds with a huge shot to the body before rocking Usyk with a big uppercut. Fury looks to have worked out the Ukrainian and is making the most of their significant size difference. Fury ends the round with yet another taunt of Usyk - The Gypsy King knows he is on top.</p>

<p>Fury continues to land a number of heavy shots to the body of Usyk and begins hunting the Ukrainian. A low blow by Fury upsets Usyk provides a moment of pause in the fight with the Ukrainian working Fury hard. The pair go blow-for-blow to end the round with the Briton is equal to Usyk's own attacks.</p>

<p>Fury is growing in stature in this fight but Usyk, as he so often does, is defending imperiously. Fury, ever the pantomime entertainer, raises two hands to the crowd and is increasing the pressure on the Ukrainian - cutting him above the eye. Usyk responds with a few shots of his own but Fury has taken the initiative in the third and fourth rounds.</p>

<p>Just as the end of the second round had threatened, both fighters have stepped up the aggression. Fury's camp is calling on their fighter to target the body of Usyk which caused the Ukrainian problems in his last fight against Daniel Dubois. The Gypsy King is growing into the fight and seeking to make the most of his size advantage.</p>

<p>Usyk comes out firing and lands another huge overhand left to Fury's head. Again, Fury tries to laugh off the Ukrainian's attack but looks to be struggling against the serious, determined Usyk. The Briton lands a strong jab and straight right in return but continues to be troubled by Usyk's left hand - a punch that keeps landing. The fight is opening up.</p>

<p>The bell rings and the crowd roars. The pair exchange careful, testing punches sizing each other up. Usyk, the smaller man by six inches, takes initiative and seizes control of the centre of the ring. The Ukrainian lands a few jabs to Fury's huge body before The Gypsy King starts goading the crowd and pulling faces at his opponent. Usyk is unfazed and lands a couple strong overhand lefts to end the round.</p>

<p>It is time. The 25-year wait for the next undisputed heavyweight champion of the world is almost over. Only one man will succeed Lennox Lewis to become the new undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk are set to make their way to ring. <p>Mairis Briedis will be having flashbacks to his previous defeat to Jai Opetaia as he sits in his corner, blood gushing out of his nose midway through the fight. Briedis suffered a broken nose in their first bout and in the sixth round, Opetaia appears to have found the way through again to break it once again.</p>

<p>After a relatively quiet first round, Jai Opetaia came out looking for blood and to land the killer blow. Mairis Briedis, looking every one of his 39-years, has struggled to impose himself on the fight and is being toyed around the ring by the spritely Opetaia. The Latvian may have done serious damage to Opetaia in their previous fight, but is yet to register a single, meaningful punch three rounds in.</p>

<p>The penultimate fight of the night and co-main event is between Jai Opetaia vs Mairis Briedis. This is the second fight between the pair with Briedis losing both the fight and his IBF cruiserweight title to Opetaia in a unanimous decision in July 2022. This is the Latvian's first fight back since the defeat, whereas Opetaia has won two fights by stoppage against Jordan Thompson and Ellis Zorro since. At 39-years-old, this is the last may well be Briedis' final chance at the top and, despite being underdog, cannot be counted out of this fight.</p>

<p>Anthony Carcace is pulling ahead in a tight, fiery contest against Joe Cordina midway through the 12-round fight for the IBF super-featherweight title. Cacace began taking the fight to Cordina in the third round, dropping the Welshman in controversial circumstances. Following the referee's call for break, Carcace rocked Cordina with a late punch before unloading a deluge of powerful punches to put his opponent on the canvas. Cordina rallied well to take advantage of the energy expended by the fighter from Belfast in the previous round to bring himself back into the fight. Yet, Carcace is landing multiple, heavy blows and will be confident he can finish Cordina in the second half of the fight. Serious work to do for the undefeated Welshman.</p>
