Thomas Muller: The Journey So Far

Muller was born in the West German town of Weilheim in Oberbayern. He grew up in the nearby village of Pahl, where he made his youth debut for TSV Pahl. He later joined Bayern Munich's youth academy in 2000, aged 10. The youngster made quite an impression and progressed through the youth system.

His breakthrough with the senior team came under Jurgen Klinsmann in the 2008/09 season. Louis van Gaal's arrival in Bavaria changed Muller's fortunes. The iconic Dutch manager, known for trusting youth, promoted Muller to the first team. Van Gaal famously quoted "Müller spielt bei mir immer" ("with me, Müller will always play") and the player always thanks van Gaal for his role in his growth.

Muller won his first of 13 league titles with them in 2010 under van Gaal. He was deployed as a number 10 in the 4-2-3-1 system. Muller's tactical flexibility, playmaking and goal scoring meant he could thrive as a second striker, wide midfielder or even a deep-lying midfielder at times. He was even called up to the German squad for the 2020 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot with six goals.

Muller lifted the Champions League in 2013 and went on to become a World Cup winner in 2014 by winning the Silver Ball and Silver Boot in Brazil. He was extremely fit and played almost every game as his side won 11 consecutive league titles.  The run included two sensational continental trebles in 2012/13 and 2019/20 as he became one of the most decorated players of all time.

As he entered his 30s, Muller slowed down as he started fighting niggling injuries. Muller became the record appearance maker for Bayern Munich with 756 in the 2024/25 season and scored his 250th goal recently. Muller announced in April 2025 that he was leaving the club upon his contract expiry, bringing an end to an epic 25 years in the Bavarian capital. He recently called it a day from the German international squad after the UEFA 2024 Euro as well.

After pondering his options,  Muller decided the Vancouver Whitecaps project was his best choice. He joined them as a free agent for the remainder of the 2025 season, with a Designated Player option for 2026. Muller started his career in the MLS on fire before suffering an unfortunate injury.
