Caf Women's Champions League: Mamelodi Sundowns beat Hasaacas to rule Africa

South African side Mamelodi Sundowns are champions of the inaugural Caf Women’s Champions League following a 2-0 triumph over Ghanaian outfit Hasaacas Ladies on Friday.


Goals from Chuene Morifi and Andisiwe Mgcoyi ensured victory for ‘Ka Bo Yellow’ in the final at the 30 June Stadium in the Egyptian capital of Cairo.


Sundowns rule the continent five years after they beat Egyptian giants Zamalek to rule the continent in the men’s division.


Interestingly, the win also gives South Africa some form of revenge in a week of controversy following Ghana’s 1-0 home victory over Bafana to qualify for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers third round on Sunday.


With five goals in the tournament heading into the final, Evelyn Badu expectedly led Hasaacas’ attack in the starting team, with support from influential No.10 Doris Boaduwaa while Ghana international defender Janet Egyir marshalled the defensive line.


Having gone all the way to the final without conceding a goal, goalkeeper Andile Dlamini headlined Sundowns' first XI, their backline also featuring centre-back stalwart Bambanani Mbane. South Africa international Melinda Kgadiete was among the stars in the attack.


It took 33 minutes to find the opening goal of the game when Mgcoyi pounced on a precious dink over the defensive line to deliver a ball from the right across the face of goal. Morifi was at the right place at the right time to stab home from close range.


In the 64th minute, Mgcoyi switched from provider to finisher as the South Africans doubled their lead, the attacker beating the offside line to drive a low shot beyond goalkeeper Grace Boadu into the bottom left corner.


Twelve minutes to full-time, Hasaacas almost pulled a goal back but for the agility of goalkeeper Dlamini who showed good reflex to keep out Perpetual Agyekum’s free-kick from just outside the box.


Sundowns did not finish the game with a full team as Regina Mogolola was sent off in injury time for a reckless tackle on Faustina Aidoo.
