    WHAT HAPPENED?

Orlando Pirates legend Steve Lekoelea has explained what he thinks is affecting Orlando Pirates' underperforming forward Relebohile Mofokeng.

The Bucs' former star has suggested ways to help President Yama 2000, as Mofokeng is famously known, get back to his best form.

    WHAT LEKOELEA SAID

"I have noticed that Rele’s performance has been declining. There is clearly something on his mind," Lekoelea told KickOff.

"When it comes to talent, he has it in abundance. He just needs to be mentally strong, and then we will see the old Rele again," he added.

"The coach has been playing him in various positions because he is an all-round player. He is still young, and as a big club, we shouldn't place too much pressure or have unrealistic expectations for such a young player."

    WHAT IS MORE

Lekoelea has also discussed what could be the main reason for Mofokeng's struggle.

"I have also observed that his performance has dipped. He seems too casual during matches. These things happen – a player might be considering opportunities elsewhere. However, I trust him. He's a good player, and I believe he will bounce back," he added.

“Most importantly, he still has a place in the Pirates line-up. He just needs to stay focused, that's all."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In seven games, Mofokeng is yet to score or provide an assist, and going by his own standards, this is considered below par performance.

The youngster is yet to hit the peak, as witnessed last season, where he was lethal in terms of scoring, providing assists, and generally creating chances.

In the transfer window, he has been linked with an exit, with reports suggesting he has attracted interest from various clubs outside the country.

The exit of Mohau Nkota, who is understood to be his close friend, has also been linked to his struggle this season.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MOFOKENG?

Despite his questionable performance, Mofokeng was named in Bafana Bafana's squad that will take on Lesotho and Nigeria in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Indeed, head coach Hugo Broos challenged him to focus in order to get better as soon as possible.

Bafana will face Lesotho on September 5 and then tackle Nigeria's Super Eagles on September 9.
