    WHAT HAPPENED?

Immediate former Orlando Pirates defender Paseka Mako is reportedly in advanced talks to sign for Kaizer Chiefs.

Pirates confirmed Mako's exit on Friday, and hours after that announcement, reports now indicate Amakhosi are ready to offer him a new home.

    WHAT IS MORE?

Given that he is a free agent, Mako is in a position to negotiate with clubs interested in him without many contractual restrictions.

Now, according to SABC Sports, Mako could be on his way to Naturena, Pirates' sworn traditional rivals.

This means the 31-year-old could be part of the Glamour Boys next season, where he could feature in Soweto derbies, but this time around in different colours.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mako, alongside Thabiso Monyane, left Pirates together as the Sea Robbers let them go in a bid to create space for their expected new recruits.

The left-back spent seven seasons with the Buccaneers, but he faced injury challenges, and one of the biggest such setbacks was a knee ligament injury suffered in October 2023 that sidelined him for almost one year.

If he finally signs for Chiefs, that would mean more options for Nasreddine Nabi. The Tunisian coach mostly deployed Dillon Solomons and Bradley Cross and, at times, Zitha Kwinika when Reeve Frosler was injured.

Amakhosi had reportedly identified Fawaaz Basadien as their top left-back transfer target, but this is understood to have proved a difficult mission, as Stellenbosch FC were unwilling to let go of one of their prized assets.

Riaan Hanamub of AmaZulu had also been reported to be a target for Chiefs, but the Namibian has been offered a new contract by Usuthu, technically making him unavailable.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAKO?

Given the amount of time he spent with the Pirates and what he won with them, his next move will be closely watched by the club's fans.

Should he end up at Naturena, that could be taken as betrayal, especially by fans who adored him while serving the Sea Robbers.
