Son was left distraught as South Korea's quest for their first Asian Cup since 1960 was thwarted by Jordan as Yazan Al-Naimat and Mousa Al-Tamari scored for the victors in the second half at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Qatar on Tuesday evening.

Despite dominating possession, South Korea struggled to create significant chances, and Son & Co. even failed to register a single shot on target.

"I don't know what to say really. I am so sorry," Son said post-match to the broadcaster. "Jordan are having an amazing journey at this tournament. They deserve it, they fought to the end. For us, it was a very disappointing night.

"We have to look forward, there is no time for regret. The players did their best. I'm very sorry that the game ended like this by mistake. The fans showed great support for us, I'm sorry that we couldn't deliver as our fans expected. I will try to get better as a player and also help our national team take the next step, again I'm very sorry. Now I have to go back to my club and be ready for the rest of the season."

While devastating for Son and South Korean supporters, the news of their elimination may bring relief to Tottenham fans. The forward has been unavailable for Ange Postceoglou since their 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on December 31 and has missed five matches including three Premier League games.

Son is expected to fly out of Doha as soon as possible and should reach London well ahead of Spurs' next Premier League fixture against Brighton on Saturday. Although it remains to be seen whether he is available for selection against the Seagulls, his return is crucial for Tottenham's aspirations of a top-four finish.
