SAFA given a notice as Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos confirms 'this is the right moment' to retire

  • Broos keen to retire

Hugo Broos has turned Bafana Bafana's fortunes around since taking over as the head coach in 2021.

During his tenure, South Africa have qualified for the 2023 AFCON, where the team finished third, and the 2025 edition that will be played in Morocco from late December.

However, his major achievement, arguably, was to help the national team qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

    Broos proves his critics wrong

Broos, who won the 2017 AFCON with Cameroon, has proved his critics wrong, owing to what he has achieved with the national team.

When he was appointed as the national team's coach, the former Belgium player signed a five-year deal with Mzansi.

However, he has now hinted he is done with coaching and will leave after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Right moment for Broos to quit?

“This is really a fantastic evening for everyone. I hoped, maybe even more than every player, that we would go to America," Broos told reporters.

"For me, it’s sentimental. I was already at a World Cup as a player at the end of my career, and now I do it again as a coach.

“I think this is the right moment, after the World Cup next year, to stop my career, go to my family, and enjoy the next 20 years with my grandchildren and my children," he added.

"But first of all, there is still some work to do, and we will try to do it well. Thank you."

    What comes next?

Broos will be aiming to finish his Bafana Bafana career on a high, starting with AFCON, where he hopes to help them win their second continental glory.

SAFA should take their time and get a coach who can continue from where Broos will leave the country in terms of football.
