PSL playoffs latest: Cape Town Spurs back in the big time, Maritzburg United relegated

As soon as referee Jelly Chavani blew his whistle to signal the end of the game between Maritzburg United and Cape Town Spurs at the Harry Gwala Stadium, Shaun Bartlett fisted the air in jubilation as he guided the Mother City club to the Premier Soccer League.

The Team of Choice filled the stadium and painted it blue, but that was not enough to spur Fadlu Davids' side on to a win as they were held to a goalless draw.

United needed to win the match by any margin and they would have protected their top-flight status but Spurs held on for a point that was enough for them to earn a spot premium division of South African football.

Meanwhile, Davids and company will join Marumo Gallants as the two PSL sides that have been relegated to the National First Division, while Spurs and Polokwane City will be part of the top-flight next season.

This is the second time Bartlett has guided a team back to the PSL as he did the same with Golden Arrows in the 2014/15 season.
