Orlando Pirates begin post-Jose Riveiro era with frustration result after TS Galaxy strike late in PSL clash

After a goalless first half, Orlando Pirates took the lead through Bandile Shandu on 64 minutes at Orlando Stadium.

But substitute Mpho Mvelase struck in stoppage time to grab a point for TS Galaxy in the Premier Soccer League 1-1 draw.

It was a frustrating outing for the Buccaneers, who were playing their first match after Jose Riveiro left the club.

Pirates remain second on the table while TS Galaxy are still contesting for a top-eight spot.

This has to go to Bandile Shandu, who started the season as a bit-part player but has, of late, proved his worth.

With the right-back's contract expiring in June 2026, he could have earned himself a new deal from the last two games.

TS Galaxy coach Adnan Beganovic has now gone for six straight league games without tasting victory.

That has jeopardised the Rockets' chances of finishing the season in the top three.

Also, a big loser from this encounter was Pirates caretaker coach Mandla Ncikazi, who might have fluffed a chance to impress his bosses to appoint him as Riveiro's successor.

The Buccaneers still have some matches to play catch-up in this campaign and they visit relegation-threatened SuperSport United on Tuesday.

But Saturday's match was TS Galaxy's last match of the season, a game they needed to assure themselves of a top-eight spot.
