    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns were set to face Sekhukhune United in the quarter-finals of South Africa’s version of the FA Cup, however, the PSL postponed the fixture after discovering on social media that the stadium was double-booked. South Africa’s U-17 women’s team is scheduled to play Nigeria at the same venue in a Fifa Women’s World Cup qualifier.

The women’s match is set for 15h00, while the Sundowns against United game was scheduled for 20h00. The league cited safety concerns as one of the key reasons for the postponement and a new date for the quarter-final clash will be announced in due course. The postponement has sparked criticism over the PSL’s handling of fixtures.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sekhukhune United recently parted ways with coach Lehlohonolo Seema, appointing Kaitano Tembo and Paulos Masehe as interim coaches. The postponement gives the duo additional time to prepare for their first major challenge as they aim to avenge he recent league defeat they suffered at the hands of Miguel Cardoso's side.

Meanwhile, Sundowns will welcome the break as the Portuguese mentor had previously raised concerns over fixture congestion. The extra rest will allow his squad to recharge after a grueling schedule. The PSL has faced multiple fixture disruptions this season, particularly involving Royal AM. The club’s financial troubles have led to their removal from the competition, with SARS set to auction off their assets.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PSL?

Attention now shifts to other quarter-final matches, including Stellenbosch vs. Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United vs. Orlando Pirates as those games will go on as planned.

On Sunday, Magesi FC will take on Marumo Gallants, with the hope of making it to the last four whilst juggling position one in MFC and seeking promotion. The league will also need to reschedule the Sundowns vs. Sekhukhune match. The PSL must now address fixture planning to prevent similar scheduling conflicts in the future.
