    WHAT HAPPENED?

Jose Riveiro is set to join Egyptian giants Al Ahly after parting ways with Orlando Pirates.

During his time with the Buccaneers, the Spaniard lifted five trophies, including domestic cups, but fell short in the league title race.

His side was also eliminated in the semi-finals of the Caf Champions League, leaving him without continental silverware.

Now, Riveiro has the opportunity to compete for Africa’s biggest club prize with the most successful team in Caf Champions League history.

Reports suggest that his move to Al Ahly is all but confirmed, signalling a new chapter in his coaching journey.

Speaking on his departure, Riveiro praised the immense talent within the Pirates squad.

He also made it clear that in modern football, signing players is a collaborative decision, not one made by coaches alone.

His remarks sparked speculation about whether he may return to sign players from his former club.

    WHAT RIVIERO SAID

"Well, it's a difficult question," he admitted. "Pirates are full of talent, full of really good future prospects, but that's not my role and will never be," said Riviero as reported by Soccer Laduma.

"In today's teams, we as coaches have a say, obviously, in the players who are coming and going. But it belongs more to the strategic side of the business. In this case, for Orlando Pirates and whichever club who wants to have a look at our talent here.

"The role that I'm playing in that kind of situation, trust me, is minimum. And whatever happens in the future, it's not going to have a straight relation with my decision, my influence or my opinion."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Riveiro’s tenure at Pirates will be remembered for the hope he brought to the team and the silverware he delivered.

He played a vital role in rejuvenating the squad and providing a platform for young players to rise.

His leadership brought structure and belief back to a team that was hungry for success.

Now, Mandla Ncikazi will step in as interim coach to guide the team through the remainder of the season.

In a heartfelt message, Riveiro made it clear he would never coach another team in South Africa, declaring himself “Once and Always a Pirate.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR PIRATES?

With the league title out of reach, Pirates will now focus on securing a second-place finish.

That position will ensure their return to the Champions League next season.

The remaining games are crucial for the club's continental ambitions.
