Nedbank Cup: Mamelodi Sundowns made to sweat for win by stubborn University of Pretoria as Tshwane giants secure semi-final spot

Sundowns got off to a perfect start when star striker Lucas Ribeiro Costa broke the deadlock just eight minutes into the game with a remarkable curling shot from the edge of the box into the top corner.As the first half unfolded, University of Pretoria posed a threat in attack, and just after the half-hour mark, Delano Abrahams equalized with a strike from close range. Despite Sundowns appearing determined to take the lead once again, the first half ended with the score tied at 1-1.The second half witnessed an intense struggle, with Sundowns dictating the majority of possession but unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. At the full-time whistle, the match concluded with a 1-1 scoreline, leading to extra-time. Following 120 minutes of play, with Sundowns pressing hard in attack and coming close to scoring, Tuks held firm and forced the match into a penalty shootout, where Masandawana won 4-3 to progress to the Nedbank Cup semi-final round.

WHAT HAPPENED?

AmaTuks’ Delano Abrahams proved to be a constant menace to the Sundowns defence, posing a threat whenever his team launched an attack. Adding to his outstanding performance, he topped it off with a goal on the night and a goal in the penalty shootout.

Despite Sundowns' dominance in the match and their numerous opportunities in attack, they struggled to convert chances into goals and were unable to penetrate Tuks' defence effectively after scoring in the first half.

THE BIG LOSER

The Brazilians will redirect their attention to Premier Soccer League action as they face Moroka Swallows on Monday, April 15th. Following this, they will proceed to the first leg of the Caf Champions League semi-final against Esperance on Saturday, April 20th.
