    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a quarter-final spot in the Caf Champions League with a 1-1 draw against AS FAR at Loftus Versfeld. With the group stages over, they now wait to learn their quarter-final opponent, potentially Orlando Pirates.

Thapelo Morena lauded the team's mentality and expressed the need to shift focus to domestic football. He emphasized the importance of opening a gap in the league standings while maintaining the winning momentum.

Morena also highlighted how winning matches helps prepare them for continental competition. Sundowns aim to dominate both the league and the Nedbank Cup after finishing as runners-up in 2024.

    WHAT MORENA SAID

"I think the mentality is going to be the same. The hunger is going to be the same because it's different in the PSL. We played against Magesi in the final and we did not have a good result, so we are going to take it a notch up," Morena told media.

"We want to fix our record in the league and we know that the number two (Orlando Pirates) is three points behind us. We need to try to level up and open the gap."

"If we continue winning, we know it's going to be difficult for other teams to catch up. And also, when you win and the other team wins, it's good because it pushes us because we are preparing for the Champions League also."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The group stage success means Sundowns will now prioritize domestic competitions. They lead Pirates by three points in the league with 11 matches played. Sundowns' resilience, as seen in their come-from-behind victory in the DRC, will be vital for defending their PSL title.

A winning mentality and consistent performances will ensure they stay ahead of their rivals. In the Nedbank Cup, the Brazilians are determined to perform better after last year’s second-place finish. The team’s hunger and focus remain crucial for their ambitions.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

Sundowns travel to Polokwane to face Magesi FC in their next league fixture. This encounter carries extra significance as Sundowns lost to Magesi in the Carling Knockout final last season.

Miguel Cardoso’s men will aim to exact revenge while solidifying their league position. The team is expected to bring its Champions League momentum into this domestic challenge.
