Mamelodi Sundowns sneak into Caf Champions League semi-finals after penalty shootout breaks stubborn Young Africans

After playing to 0-0 draws over two legs, Sundowns prevailed 3-2 through penalties on Friday to progress to the Caf Champions League semi-finals.It was a first half of a few promising chances and the two teams started opening up in the second-half. A nerve-wracking incident that got Sundowns worried then came on 59 minutes when Aziz Ki's stinger crashed against the crossbar and appeared to have crossed the goal line. But the referee ruled the Burkina Faso forward's effort as not having crossed the line.The two teams failed to breach each other and the match went straight to a penalty shootout where Masandawana emerged as victors.

Masandawana captain Ronwen Williams saved two penalties to remind many of his 2023 Africa Cup of Nations heroics.His valiant effort during the kicks was crucial and denied the Tanzanian giants a place in the semi-finals.

After being Young Africans' biggest threat and shaking the Masandawana defence, Ki could feel hard done. The Burkinabe had what looked like a legitimate goal being denied before his evening turned for the worst by being denied by Williams during the penalty shootout.

THE BIG LOSER

Masandawana now switch focus on their Premier Soccer League campaign as they bid for a record-extending seventh straight title.They wait for the winner between Esperance and Asec Mimosas to know their Champions League semi-final opponents. Yanga also turn their attention to their domestic responsibilities and they are on course to win the league title as they top the table.
