    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns strengthened their squad in the January transfer window, signing Jayden Adams from Stellenbosch, Keanu Cupido from Cape Town City and securing Lucas Suarez on loan from CA Talleres.

Adams and Suarez have already gained valuable minutes, with the former seamlessly integrating into midfield alongside Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende.

The 29-year-old center-back has made six appearances and scored his first goal in the league against Babina Noko. He has shown that he is an asset to the defensive line and has formed a great partnership with Grant Kekana.

Speaking to the media, coach Miguel Cardoso shared insights on how Suarez is adapting to South African football and adjusting to the club’s playing style.

    WHAT CARDOSO SAID

“Regarding Lucas, it’s not easy for me to juggle in terms of centre-backs. We have options, of course, and Lucas has been doing quite well," Cardoso told the media, as reported by Soccer Laduma.

"It’s not easy the style of game because it’s not exactly the same as South America or Argentina (to be specific). Too many long balls to cope with, so too much running back. I think he is coping with it but struggling, and we need to manage him in the right way for him to always be available for us."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sundowns boast one of the league’s most lethal attacks, scoring 46 goals while conceding only 11 in 19 games, a defensive record they share with Orlando Pirates.

Under Cardoso, even defenders have contributed offensively, with the backline collectively scoring five goals this season. Suarez, on loan until the season's end, has already showcased his qualities and could push for a permanent move.

The former Argentina U-20 international faces stiff competition for a starting spot against the likes of Mosa Lebusa and Malibongwe Khoza. Cardoso has previously addressed Khoza’s absence from the starting lineup, explaining that his management is focused on strengthening him for future opportunities.

With Sundowns aiming for domestic and continental success, squad depth in defense will be crucial. Suarez’s performances in the coming weeks will determine whether he cements a long-term future at the club.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SUNDOWNS?

Mamelodi Sundowns host Kaizer Chiefs at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday, March 1, looking to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Orlando Pirates are still catching up on their games in hand, which has sparked debates over fixture congestion.

Former Bafana Bafana international Sipho Ndzuzo recently raised concerns about how this scheduling imbalance might impact Pirates' title hopes. Despite this, Sundowns remain focused on securing maximum points and maintaining momentum. With their attacking and defensive prowess, they will be eager to dominate their arch-rivals.
