    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Tiyani Mabunda has showered praise on rising central defender Malibongwe Khoza following his exceptional performances in his debut campaign.

The towering centre-back earned promotion to the senior team of the Brazilians at the start of the 2024-25 season due to his impressive displays with the club's reserve team.

Khoza was a regular fixture under the recently dismissed coach Manqoba Mngqithi, and that continues with the new Downs head coach Miguel Cardoso.

Mabunda, who now serves as Sundowns' ambassador and co-host of the Pitchside Podcast, did not hold back in commending Khoza for his outstanding performances.

    WHAT MABUNDA SAID

"Unbelievable player, that one. At such a young age to have such confidence and being comfortable on the ball," Mabunda told FARPost.

"He has shown hunger. That’s what is expected from a youngster. He’s also confident. He has the height that’s needed from a defender, and he’s becoming better at decision-making.

"To be able to step up in a team like Mamelodi Sundowns, in your first season and stamping your position. That’s something we need to appreciate and get from youngsters," he added.

"We appreciate what Malibongwe is doing right now at this time. The club needed a player like him, especially since he is young. He has grabbed the opportunity."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Khoza has been continually impressive for Sundowns, shining in both the domestic league and on an international stage, having scored one goal in 14 competitive matches to date.

The young player competes for the same position with international defenders like Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, Mosa Lebusa, Rushine De Reuck, and others in a star-studded Downs team.

However, since his promotion to the senior side, he has seized the opportunity fully as he has been starting ahead of several of those more seasoned players.

    WHAT NEXT?

After being a substitute in Sundowns' victory over Maniema Union in the Caf Champions League match last Saturday, Khoza will strive to start in the club's next fixture against AS FAR Rabat on Sunday.

The Tshwane giants are desperately in need of a victory to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the competition, and his inclusion could prove pivotal in aiding the team’s advancement to the next stage.
