Having defied the odds to make it out of Group E, which also had the USA and France, the fans expected South Africa to get past Colombia in the Round of 16 in the ongoing World Cup.

However, Raymond Mdaka's men fell 3-1 at the Fiscal Stadium in Talca on Wednesday.

Joel Canchimbo delivered the first blow in the seventh minute, but Kaizer Chiefs attacker Mfundo Vilakazi levelled matters from the penalty spot in the 49th minute to make it 1-1.

However, a brace from Neiser Villarreal in the 63rd and the sixth minute of added time gave his team a 3-1 win, which sealed their quarter-final slot.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The exploits by Amajita in both the continental and global competitions underline the massive talent in South Africa.

Beating top dogs in Africa to win the U20 AFCON title was seen as a fluke by some critics.

However, getting into the next phase of the World Cup has proved them otherwise, which is a massive statement to the world.
